Sycamore Square Group were appointed to provide project management, contract administration and construction design management principal designer services for this project. The scheme included for overcladding three buildings on the University of Bradford estate. The original buildings were constructed in reinforced concrete with ribbon glazing above solid spandrel panels. The amount of the original glazing was considered excessive leading to high heat loss in winter and high solar gain in summer. The principal objective of the overcladding works was to upgrade the buildings to current insulation standards and to improve their appearance in line with the earlier works already completed on site. As originally built the external fabric of these buildings contained no insulation and they had been deteriorating through exposure to the elements making them increasingly porous to both wind and rain. The works were completed on time and within the budget constraints and achieved the objectives of the Salix bid which was to significantly reduce the buildings’ carbon footprint, whilst unifying and enhancing the appearance, protecting the existing fabric, extending the building’s economic life and providing an overall improvement in the thermal performance of the external envelope to current standards.
