Sycamore Square Group were appointed as the Universities single source supplier for professional services to design and manage the refurbishment of the Under croft walkway. The existing walkway was a primary access route to one of the key teaching buildings. It was dark and largely infilled with bicycle stores and motorbike bays. Working with our framework interior designers we developed a scheme to increase openness and definition to the access route we relocated the stores and created an illuminated framework around the opening. We clad over the existing cold concrete with warm Corten look material with integrated LED lighting to create a light, safe, open feeling that draws staff and students into the route. New tiling was installed to the cold concrete columns and new LED feature lighting installed above to enhance visibility and provide a contemporary feel to the space. The existing plant room doors were clad to recess them into the wall and the gas boiler relocated to create a clean open walkway. The project was delivered over a busy summer period on time and on budget to facilitate the start of term.
