Project overview

The Counting House, is part of the Grade 1 Temple Works site and provided office space for the mill owners, board members and Clerks. Based on the temple of Horus at Edfu, the Egyptian influence of the architecture is evident in the winged sun disc motif and hieroglyphics carved into the stone, testament to Egypt’s role in the flax industry. Sycamore Square Group were appointed as Principal Contractors, Principal Designers, Temporary Works Coordinators and Building Surveyors for the refurbishment of the Grade 1 Listed Counting House in Leeds which was carried out over two phases. The scheme secured grant funding from Historic England and was carried out in two phases, the first phase included for external works; superheated steam clean of masonry, masonry repairs and repointing, glazing replacement, roof replacement, redecoration of original windows, repair, replacement and redecoration of ironwork, rainwater goods and leadwork, timber window and door repairs and replacements, structural timber and slab replacements and removal of interior wall finishes and ceilings. The second phase was carried out once the building had dried out and included for; removal of existing finishes, original plaster repairs and redecoration, installation of new lighting, heating and finishes throughout. Throughout the scheme, we worked closely with the heritage consultants and Historic England to agree the approvals required to make sure that the collaborative engagement throughout, would facilitate an efficient approval process and the scheme was completed on time and within budget.
